Firsts

We are always excited about Nolan's firsts.  His first time in a plane, at the beach, at a wedding, etc.  He just now experienced a BIG 'first.'  His first earthquake.  It was a 5.4 with an epicenter in Chino Hills, not far away from my mom's house.  I was in the shower and some things fell off the wall.  Being a southern Cali girl, I quickly jumped out and stood in the doorway and called for my mom to make sure she had Nolan.  I was upstairs and they were downstairs and we waited until the rolling stopped.  Shortly after, Nolan experienced another first...aftershocks.  We are glad that everyone is okay.

Visit to Grandma's
I've made my second trip. This time to southern California, where most of my American family lives.  I wasn't as good for mommy on the plane as I was when we went to Europe with daddy.  Luckily for her, it was only 2 and a half hours.  Now that we are here, I am loving it.  Most days are pretty busy with meeting new people.   It's fun, but it gets a bit tiring for me.  That's why I have been sleeping through the night so well here (for the first time ever).  Mommy is amazed, and so happy (and rested!).  We still have another week here of meeting new people.  Today we are going to Cousin Jamie's house on the beach, in Newport Beach.  Check out the pictures of my trip so far.

Love,
Nolan

At home
So Nolan has come home after two nights in the hospital. He is doing very well and so is Sherri. Sherri and Nolan are both sleeping well and getting the rest they need. It is so very sweet to have him at home. Bella is all impressed as well and acting very nice to Nolan.

I have uploaded a new video and some new pictures. I will keep updating the sites.

Naturally I will post pictures here but I will also post them on http://sherri.hubel.com and http://olaf.hubel.com

We also wanted to thank everybody for the very nice emails, flowers and presents.

Regards,

Nolan, Sherri & Olaf

March 09

to Olaf from Sherri
Hi Boy! Mirjam has asked me to write a little something to you before the birth of our baby boy! First she asked me to paint a picture of what I see us doing as a family. 'Do I really have to paint it?' I asked. 'Or do I just describe it?' She said to just describe.Well, I picture us doing so many things. I see us walking every day with Bella, and carrying the baby or pushing him in the stroller. I see us taking more local, outdoor vacations, so that we don't really have a schedule of places to see, but just more importantly being together. I see us in Holland, France, or California for long summers in the creeks, lakes, forest, fields and ocean; recreating the fun and freedom we had as kids. However, every once in a while, I see us doing some more exotic travel like we have in the past; taking the baby (or kids) along to see the world! I see you teaching him how to make things out in nature and not worrying about how dirty he gets. Later, when he gets older, I see you teaching him indoors with all the technology things that you think he will like. And, of course, as I always tell you, I see you reading him stories in Dutch. I bet his accent will be so cute! As we both know, I will probably be the one outside playing sports with him, though I think you will come to like it as well. I also see myself reading many stories to him and watching his excitement as his eyes get bigger when he sees the pictures or it comes to his favorite part. I already know that are many things you will be good at as a dad. You are natural around other kids, and they always like you, and although she is a dog, you are so consistent and patient with Bella. I think you will be the patient one. You will be better at disciplining; and he will listen better to you. You will always make time for him, even if you are busy with work or other adult stresses. You will get down on the floor to play at his level. I also know that you will always Hi come home happy (just as you do now) and he will love that! I also think that he will feel that you are open and that he can always talk to you. I think the one challenge for you will be sleep deprivation; especially in the beginning. We know you need your 8 hours a night. I am hoping that it won't be a challenge for you to let our little boy become whatever he wants to, not just what we like. Besides that, there are only great things!!! As for me, I think I will be very nurturing and be there for him emotionally. I hope that he will think of me as fair. Later in life, I hope he feels that I am nonjudgmental, and that he can talk to me about what's on his mind. I will probably keepsake everything, and take lots of pictures, so I hope he will like that as he gets older. I hope that I do many hands-on activities with him and realize how special homemade things are instead of store bought, like a birthday cake. As for challenges, I hope that I will be patient. I hope that I will take many opportunities to play and interact with him, instead of worrying about what 'needs' to be done. I think that it might be challenging to not have as much time for myself as I do now. Oh, and I hope that I can tolerate the messes...dirty shoes running through the house, spills, stains on couches and clothes, etc. Other than all that, WE ARE READY! We have been waiting for a while for our baby to come into this world and we can't wait to be parents. I don't think we see it as a change in lifestyle; I think that it will really suit us! You will be a great dad and I can't wait to watch and admire our baby together. Love, Sherri

to Sherri from Olaf
When I think about us and our newborn child I picture us sitting in the front yard watching the kids play with each other and the dogs running after them. I think Sherri will be a fantastic mother because of the love she has to give and her willingness to share this with others, where I will truly enjoy playing around and teaching our kid things I have learned over the years. I don't believe there will be anything that we will find that hard, simply because we will do it all together for always.

“I have not met Olaf but if Sherri picked him he has to be a gem. From Sherri shares about Olaf he sounds like a wonderful man and a great husband. Together those to attributes make a great dad-to-be. I met Sherri while teaching in San Jose and she had such a rapport with the kids and did the most awesome things for their self esteem...I see Sherri as a fabulous mother ...someone who will adore her child and raise him to be an endearing man. Roger and I wish them all the best in the world....a happy and healthy baby who will bring them all the joy they deserve”. Love Linda and Roger
